Washtenaw Sheriff issues warning about homemade chemical bombs

Dear Neighbors:
Recently the Washtenaw County Sheriff's Office warned area communities of homemade "works" bombs that are made of household chemicals in plastic bottles.  These have been created as "pranks"; but the laws do not regard them as such.  The chemical reaction creates a volatile build-up of gases and subsequently detonates the bottle with a great amount of force.  The force generated by the explosion is enough to severe fingers and can also cause 2nd and 3rd degree chemical burns. The chemicals can possibly cause blindness and the toxic fumes can be harmful.
A neighbor in Loch Alpine reported hearing an explosion one night, and the next day finding an exploded plastic bottle in his yard.  Please be aware...   When you are out and about in your yards, or your children are playing outside, if you find a soda bottle or any other bottle, examine it carefully before you touch it or get near it.  If it shows signs of swelling, or melting in any way or simply just has liquid inside of it, DO NOT TOUCH IT! Call 911.
Children should be informed to understand the dangers and the consequences of making these devices.  Not only could it be deadly to the maker or a victim, but making one of these devices is a felony "Possession of a Substance with Explosive Capabilities."  The penalties range from 15 years to life imprisonment, depending on the severity of damages and injuries.
