AREA TIDBITS

Newspapers

The Ann Arbor News serves this area well and is the main newspaper covering not only the local, but national and international news, and is published daily. For primarily local news, particularly the school news coverage, the Dexter Leader, a weekly publication, is also available.

Garbage Collection and Recycling

Our current waste disposal company is Mr. Rubbish, a division of Waste Management. Garbage and recyclables, such as newspapers, plastic, glass, tin, etc. are picked up each Tuesday. Containers should be placed curbside before 6:00am. Call 1-800-971-7490 for more details.

A yard waste program is also offered during the summer season for an additional fee. The Loch Alpine office will offer details of this service in the spring. Contact John if you wish to be added to this service.

Parks, Swimming and Recreation

Swimming- At the Dexter Community Pool, swimming lessons and open swimming are available to residents of the school district. Contact the Dexter Community Education for further information.

Public beaches in the area include Big Portage Lake (off Symour Road between Welch Lake road and Portage Lake Road), Silver Lake and Half Moon Lake (both located at North Territorial at Dexter Town Hall Road) and Independence Lake (off Jennings Road between 6 Mile and North Territorial.) While the Huron River is great for canoeing, swimming is not recommended.

AACC- The Ann Arbor Country Club is open by membership only.

Parks- Delhi Metropark is located just across the bridge at Huron River Drive and North Delhi Road. It has picnic pavilions, ball fields, a ship play structure, additional swings and slides, and a lovely river location. Just upriver along Huron River Drive towards Dexter is Dexter-Huron Metropark, very similar to Delhi Metropark, but with only limited swings and slides. Hudson Mills Metropark can be reached by taking Huron River Drive to North Territorial Road, turning left, and entering the park not far from the turn. Hudson Mills Metropark is quite large, with a park headquarters building, trails, nature guide walks, cross-country skiing and ice skating in season, play structures, picnic grounds and pavilions. There is also a Hudson Mills Metropark Golf Course located on Dexter-Pinckney Road just outside of Dexter. Independence Lake County Park has trails and swimming. Skip's Huron River Canoe Livery is located near Delhi Metropark (turn right after crossing the bridge). Reservations are highly recommended. They will take you upriver to a drop-off point and you then canoe back down-river to the livery, where you left your car.

Shopping, Recreation

Markets- Kerrytown Farmers' Market in Ann Arbor, is open on Wednesdays and Saturday mornings; Rulig's Farm Market on Island Lake Road west of Dexter; Alexander's on Whitmore Lake at North Territorial Road, various roadside stands along country roads. Coleman Farms Market is located on Liberty west of Stadium.

Interesting Shops- Dexter has the Dexter Mill for a variety of gardening, farming and pet supplies. Main Street in Dexter has a variety of shops to visit. Restaurants include Cousins’ Heritage Inn, an award-winning restaurant on Main Street, the Dexter Pub, The Lamplighter and Mary T’s. Busch’s, Dexter Pharmacy, Hackney Hardware, Huron Camera Shop and the Card Shop are musts for any shoppers! Just on the outskirts of town, on Ann Arbor Road is a new mall with Country Market and the Dexter Pharmacy as well as other shops.

Chelsea has numerous shops along its main street, also known as M-52. In addition, Chelsea also has The Common Grill, a very highly thought of restaurant, and The Purple Rose Theater, newly expanded theater owned by Chelsea native, Jeff Daniels, and featuring a theater group.

Shopping Centers- The closest grocery stores are: Busch’s and Country Market (Dexter), Kroger (at Jackson & Stadium), Meijer's (opening soon) at Jackson and Zeeb, and also at Ann Arbor-Saline Rd. and Busch's (at South Main, near Mervyn's). Dexter has a dry cleaners, hardware store, bakery, card shop, two florists, video rental, camera repair shop, the mill, pharmacy, hobby shop, ceramics crafts shop, small restaurants & pub, First of America Bank, TCF Bank, small furniture store, barber shop, tailoring, party stores, insurance agents, a business supply store, and more. In other words, Dexter has a lot to offer. Ann Arbor has too much to offer to list here, but the closest shopping center is at Stadium and Jackson, where there are two centers. Maple Village (K-mart MC Sporting Goods, and Hancock Fabrics, along with several other small shops,) is located on the north side of Jackson. On the south side is Westgate Shopping Center which houses a Little Professor Book Store, TJ Maxx, the Learning Center, Rite Aid, Hallmark, etc. Further down is Kroger's grocery store!)

Movie theaters- Quality 16, located on Jackson Road, has 16 theaters and runs a variety of first run movies. Village Theater has reopened in the Maple Village Center on Maple between Dexter Road and Jackson and runs movies “later” at a substantially reduced rate!
